The Deskstar® NAS hard drive is a 7200 RPM 3.5-inch hard drive that provides an exceptional blend of reliability and performance, making it an ideal solution for consumer and commercial desktop NAS systems. This NAS-ready hard drive from HGST delivers media transfer rates that are as much as 20% faster than 5400 RPM drives and seek times less than 12ms. Furthermore, Deskstar NAS hard drives incorporate a rotational vibration sensor and achieve reliability of 1M hours MTBF.

HGST – a Western Digital Company and formerly known as Hitachi, is the latest manufacturer to announce hard disk drives that specifically addresses the Network Attached Storage (NAS) product range. Unlike its competitors HGST NAS drives are of a higher specification and has no restrictions attached limiting the use to merely 1-5 bays NAS appliances.

At SimplyNAS, we have been using HGST drives with a great deal of success, both the Deskstar (Desktop) and Ultrastar (Enterprise) drives, by far these drives have been the most reliable and have an excellent performance and value for money ratio.

A recent survey of drives failures was carried out by a cloud solution provider that vindicates our findings of the HGST being the most reliable drive when compared to its main competitors, WD and Seagate.

It is fair to say Seagate’s 1.5TB drive was fraught with errors as the drive clearly had technical flaws and should be excluded from this graph. Nevertheless, the HGST clearly stands out.

Our burn testing drives before implementation has been invaluable towards the collection of reliability and Dead on Arrival data. These then have been the basis of our recommendation for which drive to buy for NAS appliances supported by us.
