Product Overview

QNAP has always been a strong contender in the SMB NAS market, and have stepped up their game with their latest offering of their 8-Bay Rackmountable NAS the TS-879U-RP. The changes in specification are significant in all aspects including a change in platform leveraging the range to move up market. Amongst many changes, the ones that stand out are, support for 6GB/s hard drives, a beefier i3-2120 processor running at 3.3GHz, 2 GB DDR3 RAM, the ability to upgrade the RAM, dual redundant power supplies, 10 Gigabit Ethernet PCI-e (optional), and USB 3.0 support.

The TS-87U-RP is outfitted with 512MB DOM Flash Memory, sports two Gigabit RJ-45 Ethernet ports, two USB 3.0 ports in the front, four USB 2.0 ports and two eSATA ports in the back. Since the TS-879U-RP is designed as a 2U Rackmount NAS, the measurements and the deafening noise emitted prohibits its usage in the home front.

The unit measures 88(H) x 439(W) x 520(D) mm, weighs about 28lbs., and produces as whopping 54 dB while turned on. In other words, it sounds like a hair dryer. QNAP also outfits the TS-87U-RP with the familiar LCD Screen up front and offers many of the common setup options of your NAS from the menu functions.

Product Specs

The launch of the TS-879U-RP has ushered a new look and feel with the most prominent change being the introduction of a cover for the power button to avoid any mishaps from accidentally switching off power. The other major addition is the long awaited Hard Disk Tray, easy to insert and remove, with a sensible latch that eliminates the yanking of the trays whilst praying the handle does now come away in your hand!

The TS-879U-RP features USB 3.0 ports for high speed backup to external hard drives. Features

FIPS 140-2 Certified AES 256-bit Volume-based Data Encryption

The disk volume with FIPS 140-2 certified AES 256-bit encryption can only be accessed by an authorized encryption password or key. This prevents the sensitive government or businesses data on the Turbo NAS from unauthorized access and breach even if the hard disk drives or the entire system were stolen.
*The data encryption functions may not be available in accordance to the legislative restrictions of some countries. Please contact QNAP sales representatives for further information.

Policy-based Unauthorized IP Blocking

The administrator can allow, deny or auto block specified IP address or network domain which attempt to connect to the TS-879U-RP via SSH, Telnet, HTTP(S), FTP, Samba, or AFP.

Remote Login

The TS-879U-RP supports remote login by SSH (secure shell) or Telnet connection.

SSL Security (HTTPS)

The TS-879U-RP supports HTTPS connection. The administrator can upload a secure certificate and RSA private key in X.509PEM format issued by a trusted provider to allow access the TS-879U-RP by secure SSL login.

Secure FTP

The TS-879U-RP offers secure data transfer with SSL/TLS (explicit) encryption. Passive FTP port range setup is also supported.

Encrypted Remote Replication by Rsync

The data on the TS-879U-RP can be backed up to or from another QNAP Turbo NAS or Rsync server over the network securely.

Shared Folder Management

User Authority Management

Administrator can create user ID and password, and define the authority and quota for each user.

Advanced RAID Management with Hot-swap Design

RAID is an advanced feature that the QNAP Turbo NAS offers to enhance data protection and performance. The QNAP Turbo NAS has a scalable design in addition to supporting various levels of disk configurations such as RAID 0, 1, 5, 5+hot spare, 6, 6+hot spare, 10, 10+hotspare, single disk, and JBOD.

Global Hot Spare

The Global Hot Spare feature allows the administrator to share spare drives with multiple RAID volumes on the TS-879U-RP. When a hard drive fails in any RAID volume, the global hot-spare drive will automatically replace the failed drive to prevent data from being lost. Compared with a local spare drive, the Global Hot Spare function offers more efficient use of spare drives.

Multiple LAN Deployment

The TS-879U-RP supports multiple bonding modes: Balance-rr (Round-Robin), Active Backup, Balance XOR, Broadcast, IEEE 802.3ad, Balance-tlb (Adaptive Transmit Load Balancing), and Balance-alb (Adaptive Load Balancing).

Performance

The TS-879U-RP is the new king of speed taking the crown from the TS-809U. VMware integration is as smooth as silk, boosted by CPU and memory configuration, lag time being a thing of the past. Data transfer speed is impressive and do not leave you wanting as before. With the new optional 10 GBE support the QNAP TS-879U-RP has the lethal potential to leave leading competitors trailing behind, powering through even the most arduous of tasks without lag.

Remote access has evolved to work with ease with the set-up and deployment easy to accomplish. Backing up to Cloud services no longer seems unusable as the speed of the TS-879U-RP handles backing up all data very well. QNAP has definitely improved their NAS offering with this new unit and can safely claim a solid, reliable, and fast enterprise NAS array.
