The Thecus N8810U-G is a great addition to the Thecus range, if performance is the only criteria it’s a great little 8-bay. Speedy, compact, and with 10GbE installed it has a great price tag as well. We were unable to find anything that will compete on performance, specification and warranty at a price that can compete with the Thecus N8810U-G. Clearly a lot of thought’s gone into what customers demanded and Thecus seems to have clearly delivered. Thecus N8810U-G is a good choice for business network storage, with a sharp focus on data protection.

Product Overview

Thecus N8810U-G is the new generation of SMB rack mount NAS servers built in with a single 10GbE adapter, ready for action. The specification is impressive at the heart of the server is Intel Pentium G850 Dual Core CPU (2.9GHz), with 4GB DDR3 ECC RAM, expandable to 16GB, supporting RAID 0-60 and JBOD (just a bunch of disks), Free Acronis True Image backup utility, and Free McAfee Antivirus.

The N8810U-G is double packed to minimize damage and the box also houses the mounting rails required for installation within a rack. Unlike other manufacturers the rail kit is inclusive and not an optional extra. Once the server has been removed installation of the hard disk drives can commence.

Installation of the unit is pretty straightforward. Secure your Hard Drives within the trays provided and simply insert them into the NAS bays. Connect the network cable provided to the Ethernet port, and the power cable to the mains socket its ready to boot. Locating the NAS is a simple affair insert the default IP address – 192.168.1.100. You may use the wizard to guide you along or go it manually if you feel confident or know what you are doing. Logging in is simple with the username and password being admin as standard you can now access the drive section to check the drives are installed and ready to RAID.

RAID management will allow the selection of the appropriate RAID level, with all eight drives installed our HGST 4TB NAS drives were ready to be initialized. Our RAID 5 selection took over 16 hours for the full process to complete and be ready for action. If you wish to refer to a quick installation guide this can be downloaded from the Thecus website – WWW.THECUS.COM

Ready to setup up share folders? from the Storage menu, choose Share Folders, and the Shared Folder screen appears. Continue to create share folders as required.

The Thecus N8810U-G also supports snapshot. SMB and enterprise Thecus IP storage systems are now capable of saving 16 Snapshot versions of files and folders. If snapshot is a feature required ensure to select a “BTRFS” file system as that is required to enable snapshot to work.

Another feature that is useful is iSCSI Thin-Provisioning, when creating an iSCSI target volume, virtual memory is assigned to the target, allowing the physical memory to reach maximum capacity and adding new disks only when needed, to setup iSCSI thin-provisioning, simply select “Thin-Provision” mode from the “Create LUN” setting screen, and you are away.

HA (High Availability) is a feature that is available in Thecus Enterprise NAS servers currently this is only supported for the N8900, N12000PRO and N16000PRO.

Overall the features and value for money elements are impressive, for a NAS servers for under $1800.00 IT’S A NO BRAINER, and if you buy from SimplyNAS you can get an extra extended one year warranty to a total of 3 years. This is exclusive to us and a great value add when warranty

Thecus’ innovative hardware helps prevent failures. But sometimes you have to protect the NAS against itself. Adding an antivirus to the already comprehensive software bundle will provide the necessary software protection by scanning the files on your NAS and defending it against possible threats. McAfee is the world’s largest dedicated security technology company and shares Thecus’ spirit of dedication and quality. By establishing a strong partnership with them, Thecus will allow users the benefit of McAfee’s powerful software on their NAS entirely for free.

User Quota
Divide the massive storage of a Thecus NAS among multiple users. Whether there are two users or 100, User Quota make it easy to divvy up and manage disk space.

Performance

Cleary with a new processor, chipset and completely redesigned motherboard we did expect the system would do well, paired with 10GbE as well, it was a safe bet to expect an increase in performance.

Just using Gigabit the performance was better than the Thecus N8800PRO, and 3.4% faster when compared with Synology RS3412RPxs, QNAP TS-879U-RP, and in many instances with its own N8900 NAS servers, but not toppling the Xeon based NAS units. Just in the performance section it was impressive within the Gigabit category.

The Real World Test performance results are an average of twelve full test cycles. The N8810U-G was connected via the HP Procurve Switch and performance was impressive with a raw read speed of 621MB/sec and for writes it was 738MB/sec for a mapped share. We also tested a 4GB video file using IOMETER which returned a combined average read and write speed of 292MB/sec.
