The DiskStation DS1517+ and DS1817+ 5 bay and 8 bay desktop NAS servers commenced shipping April 23, 2017 together with the expansion unit DX517. Synology touts these as high performance, reliable and versatile network attached storage aimed at tech enthusiast as well as small/medium sized businesses.
The new NAS servers differ somewhat from its predecessors the DS1515+ and DS1815+ in so much as the new hardware additions which include a PCIe slot that will provide users with the opportunity to install a 10GbE network card or Synology’s M2D17 M.2 SATA SSD adapter.
The second significant change is the option of either buying a 2GB or 8GB version both supporting the upgrade to 16GB, which is a significant improvement, installation of which is easy via the accessible memory compartment.
The availability to install a 10GbE network card with dual ports will provide a significant boost performance in throughput, when combined with the maximum 16GbE memory, the current Intel Atom™ quad-core 2.4GHz processor with the dual channel memory installed touted by Synology to reach sequential throughput performance of up to 1,179 MB/s reading and 542 MB/s writing speeds.
The introduction of Synology's new M2D17 PCIe adapter card, DS1517+ and DS1817+ can be equipped with dual M.2 SATA SSDs, allowing users to enhance performance and latency using SSD caching without occupying the front drive bays, but the tradeoff is its either the 10GbE or M.2 SSD options both cannot be installed together.
DS1517+ and DS1817+ are powered by DiskStation Manager (DSM) 6.1, the versatile and intuitive operating system for Synology NAS devices. Featuring a wide range of applications for backup, network management, and productivity, DS1517+ and DS1817+ can serve an integral role in office IT infrastructure.
Both the DS1517+ and DS1817+ carry 3-year limited warranties and are shipping from SimplyNAS today.
