The Organization
Bercek and Smith Engineering, Inc. is a small civil engineering and Land Surveying firm in Royersford, Pennsylvania. The firm specializes in boundary and topographical surveys, subdivisions, land developments, flood studies and general civil engineering projects. We have been in business since 1989, doing business for private clients, commercial, industrial and institutional clients in southeast Pennsylvania.
The Challenge
We needed a solution as a file server only, and the size of our company (10 employees) would not justify the hardware and software costs of a Windows Server. The QNAP products have an excellent web-based user interface. Having successfully using the QNAP for the last 6, years, QNAP became the unit of choice.
SimplyNAS provided us with valuable insight and we purchased a turnkey system, with custom configurable drives suiting our needs exactly. We chose the QNAP TS-563 for its 5 drive configuration, and processing power. We setup the QNAP in 2 Mirrored raid pairs, and the 5th drive for Acronis PC backups. In this manner, we have our CAD department files on one pair of mirrored drives, and our other documents on the other mirrored pair. Each evening, a backup of each pair is made to the other pair.
In addition, we carry out NAS to NAS backup of all our work files to the TS-459.
The TS-459 backs up to a removable eSATA drive case, which is taken off-site each week. We also use a 100 GB On-line file folder storage from GoDaddy.com for daily cloud storage.
The Solution
SimplyNAS provided us with valuable insight in selecting the right unit for our needs and budget. They offered a wide variety of brand and enterprise hard drives to choose from. They also installed the drives and configured the system exactly as we needed. All that was left to do was to plug in the unit, setup folder shares and users, and transfer our data from the existing QNAP NAS.
The Result
The new QNAP NAS has significantly increased our storage capacity. It has been extremely reliable. The web interface is very user-friendly, and required no learning curve as we were familiar with the interface with our TS-459.
Continual Improvement
We believe the storage capacity of the QNAP TS-563 will serve us for at least the next 5 years. Drive upgrades are very easily done, so storage is not a worry.
