TVS-672N Review by Ken

5 Stars for TVS-672N and SimplyNas.
This is my first "true NAS" and it's SIMPLY GREAT!

Background:
Back 12 years ago, I built a WHS system using a small enclosure, with an Intel® Desktop Board D510MO that came with an Atom CPU and added 4 GB DDR2 memory. All I needed was something that I could backup several home computers, was quiet and had a familiar OS (Windows). WHS-V1 went away and I migrated the system to WHS-2011. It was great. I started using DLNA for my multimedia. Easy to use, easy to fix, easy on the pocketbook. Then MS decided to end the home server product line. About that time, I found PLEX. Well, an Atom processor with 4GB memory on an obsolete OS can do only so much. I decided to convert to WSE2016 in late 2018 and started my quest to find a real NAS for the home. I started looking and didn't find anything that would quite fill the bill. Most products couldn't handle the HDMI-4K on the low end and those that could were on the high end. I keep watching and the TVS-682/882 was very expensive and a bit behind with the CPU. I watched and waited and finally Aug 2019 the announcement came about the TVS-672N series with better CPU and much lower price. Just a matter of waiting for it to be released. Limp along with 1 rebuild of the WSE-2016 OS due to license expiring until the unit was available. Well, it came and no one seemed to buy it. I wanted to see the reviews. SimplyNAS kicked in 2 free M.2 which made the deal very sweet. Finally, I decided to wait no more and pull the trigger. Ordered the unit and decided to watch all the YouTubes on the unit I could find and the OS.

Now for the review:

Purchase- The purchase was easy. Plunk down Visa card and wait couple of days for the unit to arrive. FedEx delivered it ground with signed signature (fantastic). Was here to receive the unit on Thursday. It was double boxed with extra foam inside the inner box. They was no damage what-so-ever.

Installation- Hooked up an ethernet & power cable, installed 6TB hard drive and hit the power switch. About 12 minutes later after entering some easy questions, it was up and running. One quick OS update, another 12 minutes, and I was ready to convert over from WSE to my new NAS. Took about 4 hours to copy over my data. I was surprised at how quick it was to get the system up and running.. About 1 hour, I had most everything setup and configured. My first WHS system, took me about 8 hours to get up and running. Most of that time was spent on downloading software, finding drivers, creating installation disk and then running thru all the updates that had to be done. With QTS and QNAP system, it's very easy. I give the installation setup a 5+ star rating.

Hardware- Appears to be very good. I especially like the easy way you can insert/remove a hard drive. No more opening the case to replace a failed hard drive. The unit came with the M.2 chips already installed. Another PLUS! I now have 6 drive bays where my older unit had only 2 internal drive bays. Before I had no RAID and now I do. Yea! I am looking forward to the QTier feature. The 4GB ram is enough to get it up and doing most things but I decided to expand to 32GB. Why 32? I expect this unit to last me for the next 15 years. For now, I give the hardware a 5 rating.

OS- QTS 4.4.1 vs Windows (WHS/WSE). Very easy to use. Initial install has very few but important APPS. Windows was getting ready to drop the Essentials Desktop in 2016 but decided to keep it; However, it is now EOL. That was the primary reason why I decided to drop Windows. QTS fills the bill. Appears that it uses very little of memory but packs a big punch. All the utilities are there onscreen in an easy to use, easy to find location. The only thing I found lacking was Windows client backup. Sure there are ways to do it without 3rd party addins but that is the primary function I was buying this 4. WHS client backup was the slickest thing that MS ever did, IMO. Anyway, I ended up finding Xopero and using the free for 3 license to backup my Windows PC's. I have 4 PC's but the 4th unit is for grandchild and can be easily rebuilt. No problem if it is down fora couple of days. Reluctantly, I have to give QTS a 4.5 rating.

Overall- Seems to be a great product at a good price for what it does. SimplyNAS is a good company to buy this product from. They saved me tax on this product. Another reason to use them if you can. The two 1 TB M.2 freebies makes it a no-brainer. If you are looking, give this a serious consideration.

Thank you Ken for this very thorough and stellar review. We are happy that you chose to purchase with us. Let us know if there is anything else we can do for you. We greatly appreciate your business.

The argument against buying a diskless and self-populating with drives is quite compelling.

Disk Drives:

  • We ensure all drives are compatible with the relevant manufacturer, model provide conformity with the relevant compatibility guidelines.

What is NASBIT?

What is NASBIT?

NASBIT© is a Licensed trademark of SimplyNAS. The acronym stands for Network Attached Storage Burn in Testing. This term is used to describe the process of testing new Network Attached Storage (NAS) hardware and firmware for faults before putting it to use in a live environment. This is done by running 'Stress testing' software for a stipulated period of time often 24 to 48 hours, but longer if needed.

When we receive an order for a NAS system pre-installed with disk drives it's prepared and configured with RAID followed by burn testing to ensure the entire system undergoes a thorough examination thus ensuring the server passes all tests to the highest standards set by us. Should the system hardware or any associated components fail at any point of the testing cycle the system is pulled and returned back as faulty our relevant vendor partner, the process seems simple but setting it up is far from easy.

Hard Disk Drives

All Hard disk drives are pre-tested prior to integration; the smallest of faults be it tolerable within industry standards are classified by us as faults, the hard drive is rejected and eliminated from the process and again returned back to source as a D.O.A. (dead on arrival). We continue to select drives from different batches, so as to eliminate any bad batches that may have been produced during manufacturing.

One integrated the drives are put through a vigorous routine that includes stress testing, including temperature tests and a host of read, writes to ensure the drive platters are stressed to the nth degree.

Memory

First, when the new server is turned on, we boot off of the network, and proceed to run the memory test that takes its sweet time, almost 10-12 hours dependent on manufacturer and model.

RAID

The appropriate RAID level is set and the system awaits completion of RAID synchronization. Once completed the NAS server undergoes numerous re-boots and a deletion of original RAID and a final re-build of RAID level again.

Why is NAS Burn in Testing (NASBIT©) necessary?

If within the designated time span the NAS servers are still running and with zero faults, it is considered suitable for rolling out to our customers. If there is a failure of any kind the systems is replaced with a new one, including hard drives and the process starts again, until the NAS servers passes with ZERO faults.

You would normally expect that this level of testing would be completed by the hardware manufacturers and so these tests shouldn't show up any faults. In our experience of testing hundreds of machines we do find faults, and we do send systems back.

The reason it is so important to perform this level of testing on NAS servers is that the uptime demands are so high. The slightest faults will cause outages and downtime. Once a NAS server is deployed, never again will you have the opportunity to take it offline and perform such detailed testing. Even if it were to crash, there is always a demand that it be put back online as quickly as possible, not left offline whilst thorough diagnostics are completed.

Always remember this is hardware and failures can and will occur even after burn testing has been carried, that is a fact of life we cannot avoid, but we do try and eliminate some of the hassle factor with testing. Thank you for buying from us, we truly appreciate your custom.
